Making Cuts – Editing Hollywood movies legally?

According to the website this service will allow users to create custom versions of movies (akin to making stories for those of you playing with DVD Studio) so that you can take out or add elements to a DRMed movie without manipulating the original content.

What I think will be useful for schools (if it’s allowed – it’s web based and it seems that anything that takes up bandwidth these days (Skype et al) is on the outs) is that it will allow commenting of content as well. I had seem something like this at a conference a while back, but this seems to be better tuned. I’ve signed up for the beta, and hopefully I’ll get something soon.

I don’t know how well all this will dance around DRM – if it’s just a system of pointers, I would think it would work fine- but Copyright may be another issue, because even remixes would be a new version of the work, something that the Director Guild has already taken issue with. ClearPlay, CleanFilms, CleanFlicks and FamilyFlix already offer remixes and are in various amounts of hot water (I bring this up because one of the bits on the Cuts site is to remove the scary sharks from Finding Nemo… ) and all but the first now having shut down.
