If you have time, take a look at Alan Kay‘s 20 talk at TED. He uses etoys in the video and shows how many of us, especially in higher ed (my 2 bits) make things more complex than we need to in order to get anything done when it comes to teaching students. Starting with concrete examples, many if not all concepts can be explained.
This may be an over simplification, and some would disregard this as being “gamey”, but I think he’s got the nail on the head. We make things complex and then try to teach that complexity. Just like the bit about the colors yesterday, the language that is used distorts our impressions (Alan even talks about that), so be careful when introducing concepts and try to “cut to the chase”.
