Seeing in the Dark

See It (full 1080p!) bigger at SmugMug.

It seems that things are really going to get interesting at the top end of the Nikon (D3s) and Canon (1DMkIV) lines as both have revealed bodies that can essentially see in the dark. Notice, there are no quotes.

Something like this, right now, isn’t going to change the game for average consumers, but it does mean that in only a few years (2012?), consumer products could have similar sensitivity and that would open up a whole new world for the average shooter to capture. This means a whole new range of stories to be told as well.

This photo at night – http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephen_downes/307742285/ – is what sold me on digital photography. I took it in Vienna and I never expected to get the detail and colours that I got. I realized then that digital cameras were capable of things no film-based camera could ever do.

My Nikon D60 now takes quite plausible night-time pictures — not beautiful crispy clear like the car pictured here, but definitely worth keeping. Night photography remains among my favorite.

I really enjoy shooting at night as well. My recent star shots have got me interested in astrophotography and I can only imagine what these new sensors will be able to produce.
