Cracked Calendar

So, I got my new/refurbed Pearl via UPS yesterday and today has been the exercise in frustration that is moving data between my two devices. The first problem – I’ve got third party apps that I needed to bring over to the new device – I’ve already paid for them, so why should I pay for it twice?

The solution is to use VM Ware Fusion (Parallels doesn’t work) to use the Blackberry Desktop Manager (RIM – make one of these for Mac!!) go through “Switch Device Wizard” and move everything from one device to another – and make sure to update your BES or BIS account to your new PIN. BTW, you can also use this to backup your third party apps as follows:

  • Uncheck “User Data and Settings” and “Include Messages” leaving only “Third Party Applications checked.
  • Click “Next.”
  • When it’s finished backing up the apps, DO NOT click “Next” or “Cancel.”
  • Search your computer files/folders for a folder labled with your pin number. Be sure and search in hidden and system files. You’ll find the apps in a temp folder in your Blackberry folder – it’s likely hidden and labeled with your device PIN.
  • Copy this folder to another location.
  • Now go back and “Cancel” the Switch Device Wizard.
    • If you cancel the wizard before copying the folder to another location the folder is automatically deleted

After getting everything backed up, I tried to get the handheld to sync and everything works, but not iCal doesn’t want to talk to the Blackberry regardless of what I tried. Even with Missing Sync. I think think this is likely an issue with Apple and RIM together, but as I don’t think they are going to be collaborating any time soon, it’s going to be up to third party apps. This is what took the majority of the day. I found that syncing the elements one by one seems to work right now.

This got me thinking – if Google’s already doing the email push, why not the calendar sync as well?

Anyway, my brain is melting… time for the holiday.
