Androids are coming!

I remember when Google started talking about the gPhone, things were said that these phones would be cheaper than other systems because the OS would cost less… and … and … Well, it seems that is not quite the truth. After taking a look at the Rogers site and tossing my name in the hat to try to win a free phone, I noticed that the cost of the handset on it’s own was almost $600! That is as much as my Bold and likely as much as a non contract iPhone. So there must be something going on here. Either Google/HTC or Rogers is lying as to what the cost of the device really is.

If it is Rogers and Google/HTC is able to (should it choose) to push ads out over the OS and invade areas other than the browser or other apps, then there are going to be quite a few people royally cheezed – if they notice it at all – but I think that people will if those ads are all for Rogers related bits.

If Google/HTC is lying and the phone is quite pricey for Rogers to bring in, then one has to wonder what the real appeal is going to be for carriers or for the users? The costs will be the same and other than being able to rub it in the face of Belus, I don’t think it will gain much outside of early adopters.

It will be interesting to see how these phones are adopted.
