This weekend, my brother picked up Guitar Hero III for the Wii. Much to the confusion of those around me, I don’t have a Wii, and not even a real place to play it, other than at the home/house of every single one of my brothers, from the top to the bottom. So with so many Wiis out there, I didn’t need to really get my own, and a game like GH3 is one that is so much more fun with more people watching. It’s amazing fun on it’s own, but it really shines when you can relive your k-6 days.
Another thing that came up this weekend was a short conversation and then much thinking on my part about the way that gaming has changed. Shorter games, family friendly games and games that are for fun rather than simulating some environment are certainly on the rise as some manner of “informal gaming” (I think that is the buzzword that is used for it). Why might this be? Well, I’ve mentioned before that the original gaming generation is now raising their own and many responsible adult really doesn’t want to have their toddler watching Halo3 while playing with Duplo. And with younger kids, you might only have 5 minutes before duties. So this environment certainly bodes well for this new format of gaming. And in terms of GH3, battling a toddler for the axe certainly helps increase the difficulty and they get a chance to dance around to the music – so I’m thinking it’s good all around.
