The more I’ve been thinking about the Hack build, the more I’ve been thinking that the better plan for making use of the box should it not run as a Hackintosh would be to make it into a HTPC (via XBMC or Entertainer) running Linux. This way, I would be “safe” against the ever changing world of entertainment content delivery. Regardless of what happens, from now on, there will always be digital copy of the content that someone will be able to transcode and store on a disk and it is likely that the first people to be able to play that content will be Linux users.
That being said, I’ve started to find many more resources and successful build lists online – even one guy that has done almost 20 in the last few months – but by far the most useful in terms of grounding and a build list has been weaksauce12’s leopardsoup. As I research more about this project, it seems that building a Hack for a production system that I don’t want to futz with is not really the best plan. I knew any Hack I’d build would always be in need of some TLC, but as time is tight, I’d much rather spend that time with the family rather than the computer. But if I am building this for another reason (HTPC) rather than as a Mac, the time might be justified… it just means that I’ll have to go out and get a real Mac… which isn’t so bad when you think about it.
