A few days ago I was wondering why my Paradise Pier picture did so much better than my Minnie Mouse picture. As it turns out, it’s likely as much to do with the picture itself, it’s also about how Flickr evaluates images. Apparently in true social networking fashion, it’s all about how connected you are and how many people are able to see your images.
Essentially, Flickr rewards posting less than five pictures a day and the last shot that you upload is the most important. If you have more than five, it isn’t very likely that your contacts will see them, and the more contacts you have (and they don’t have to be friends, everyone is a good contact) the more exposure you get and the more people click because they are interested in your picture (I assumed the last part there).
So if you were wondering about “interestingness” and why it seems that the last ones that you upload are the ones that get the majority of the attention – this is probably why.
If you are thinking like me, Yahoo is likely using Flickr as a research platform to see what different people find interesting… and what they can be hooked with by using advertising.
