Engadget is reporting that Toronto Hydro is setting up a WiFi network as a means of reading smart meters.
While this is potentially great for people wanting more ubiquitous WiFi, I’m sure that TO like any other major city with a residential core has a load of open access points already. Certainly this will be a boon for people who are waiting for phones with WiFi that can us Skype or some other VoIP system to place calls. I think it’s going to be interesting to see how these smart meters get setup as well – no longer locked in a cabinet in the parking garage – that is for sure.
