EduCause has a really interesting piece in their latest quarterly about the mobile revolution that has been flooding across campuses without a proverbial sound. It explores ways to take advantage of the massively powerful and connected devices through SMS, the most basic data service available on all phones.
It would be cool if North American institutions would get onto this wagon. I’m sure there are institutions overseas that are already doing this or on the way. Doing everything from getting grades (people bank by txt/data, so how are grades different?) to polling understanding can be done through these systems. Personally, I’m thinking that using a phone would be much better than a clicker as students would almost never forget their phone and a $10 addition/month on their phone bill (assuming the most draconian full txt package) would be cheaper than getting a clicker or two per term.
