Kate Greene has a short interview with Bob Iannucci of Nokia about the future of the cell phone as Nokia sees it. Of the few points that are posted in the article, the first one of interest is how they plan to simplify the phone itself. I didn’t know this but there are eight radios in a cell phone and eleven antennae. If these can all be virtualized to use a single antenna and a virtual set of radios, costs will go down. The second interesting point from the interview deals with the keyboard – saying that within the next two years, those will be totally different. This is something that we’ve seen coming slowly on some models, but they haven’t really set the world on fire, except of course for the Blackberry layouts. And lastly, there is a comment that projectors in cell phones to allow for a range of interactivity, including video conferencing is not too far off.
When these gadgets hit, it’s going to be even harder to ignore the use of these devices in classrooms as the prices of these will fall into the mid range consumer class likely within a year or so of their introduction. This would give enough time to have the early adopters play with the tools and know enough to bring the next adoption wave into the future en mass.
