Picture of the Week – Buzz’n about

Well, this past weekend, there was a short span where the daystar was in the sky, so I thought I’d take Bug out for a walk to see the ducks. Sure we say some ducks, but we also saw some bees. Bug was asleep by the time we happened across her namesake critters, but I was able to get my seemingly annual bee shot. This one was so loaded down at one point that pollen was falling off her (his? Bombus…?? dunno) legs. I wanted so bad to get one of those shots, but I had a slight problem. The first was that other bugs were starting to fly about and potentially bother my sleeping Bug and I wanted to get some nice bokeh and some frozen wings if at all possible.

Well, I didn’t get everything. I like the bokeh, it could have been better. I almost shot fast enough to get the wings frozen, and I did manage to move along before Bug got bothered. So I guess it was a win – classic photographer compromise.

If I wasn’t with baby, I would have shot manual and tried a couple of shots wider open, but I think then I would not have had the entire flower structure in. I could have upped the ISO, which in full sun would have still given an amazing amount of color and it might have allowed me to catch the detail of the wings by allowing for a faster shot.

But regardless, I’m still happy with it and like this bee, this week, I’ve been buzzing about and after visiting a few choice locations, I might have some fruit to harvest in a short while… I hope.
