Picture of the Week – Butterfly in Paradise II

Butterfly in Paradise II

This is from back on TCI (yeah, I haven’t really been able to get some new random shots yet between regular busy work and commissioned shoots). The interesting thing about it is not the fact that I got the shot, but how I got it. At the time I was using my 10-22 lens, so unlike the 70-200 that gives me plenty of stand off room, This lens requires me to be pretty much on top of the subject to get any significant level of detail. This was not an easy feat since these butterflies were very skittish. So what I did was make the best of what I had. I put the camera into 5fps, put my arms out and started shooting blind, trusting that my estimations of framing would be correct. And sure enough, they were. I took about 5 shots before this butterfly left and though it needed a bit of cropping to fill out nicely, I’d say it makes for not too bad a shot. The distortion at 10mm seems to work well and flash of color across one of the magic third lines makes for some interest.
