Well, a month after he was given only 48h to live, my Uncle passed away peacefully yesterday. The burning orange skies of the past few weeks have been replaced by the cold blue of the coming darkness. But not all is darkness, as blue is also the color of a new baby’s eyes.
Both babies and the sun touch us all so deeply, that we can’t even imagine live without them. Watching when the babies who are close to the family visit with everyone and light up their lives was just as though some sun had been brought into their lives for even the briefest of moments.
One of the babies (who is actually a toddling one year old with a four “word” vocabulary of “Ha” for hi, “Ma” for Mom, “Da” for Dad, granddad or uncle and “Ba” for everything else) developed a daily routine as soon as he learned to walk (at the hospital) over the last month to check in on all the patients on the ward and just say “Ha” and then to go to the nurses to say “Ha” as well. I got to tag along yesterday for what likely would have been the last time he would have taken his rounds and it was just amazing to see what impact he had.
