Office 2007 doesn’t want to play with everyone else?

TUAW is reporting that the default file format for Office 2007 isn’t compatible with Office 2004 for the Mac. I’m sure it’s not a bit deal to have users switch the file type (ok, then again, it may be), but I think the bigger problem with this is going to be all the other solutions out there that have adopted the MS “standard”. I wonder if Google Docs will be able to make use of it. If that is the case, that will be a bonus, otherwise, like TUAW states, we’ll just have to wait for the Open Office update.

Wired has some updates – though it seems that it’s going to be more of the same – where we’ll have to hope that users understand the file formats that they are sending out. A tall order when most of them barely understand where they are saving (well maybe most do, but a significant number don’t).

The bigger issue is that the next version of Office for Mac won’t have VBA, so all those enthusiastic macro users who share files will have to run it under Windows. Might this be the death of Office for the Mac? IE 2003, VirtualPC 2005, Office 2007.

That is true, the lack of cross platform scripting will be the ultimate deal breaker.
