I’ve mentioned a few things about Twitter in the past, referring to it as a microblogging platform, but as with any growing Web2.0 app/platform, there are changes coming. TR has an interview with Evan Williams – the one behind Blogger – going over what his plans are for the service (well a couple of thoughts only in rality). Among the new clients are ones that allow for what Williams calls “ambient awareness” so that twitter updates happen in the background (and can be ignored -if possible… yeah right…) for the current generation. When talking about the second generation, the message and it’s routing is still the essential part of the system (being able to deliver the message to those who care… sounds like something ripe for advertising… but then the question is how do you get people to sign up for ads?).
Even though there are many people using the service and my personal belief that the small details are essential to maintaining relationships, I still don’t see Twitter as being anything more than a blogging/social networking add on. It’s good for those who don’t have lots of time to put ideas down in any other manner, but at the same time it can take up a heap of time, so in the end, the user isn’t that much further ahead.
One use that I think it might really be well suited for though is team tracking – especially when combined with a blog.
