This was an interesting find a couple of days ago. It seems that in a 2006 study, the top three uses of an LMS had little to do with learning, but more to do with admin – they were reporting, compliance and assessment/testing. Granted the last one there lines up with teaching to some degree, but what it feels like to me, is that there is little being done online (this is a US study I believe) that isn’t already being done in the classroom. If there were new ideas being played with online, that were not part and parcel of the traditional classroom, one would think that content, collaboration and authoring would be ranked much higher. But no, it seems that even with online tools, it’s “teach to the test” and every teachable moment must in some manner be accountable for, so we should make sure that everyone gets the same.
