HD DVD Dead?

Well it seems that the last of the studios is getting ready to leave HD-DVD. So, it seems that it might finally be safe for people to start to think about getting into the next generation disc format. But with that said, how many people are willing to get a second library of discs after just getting into HDMI upconverting DVD players and paying a mint for 5.1? Are we ready for 7.2 sound and the return to one disc at a time DVD viewing?

After a raft of posts that are tech oriented and not really teaching related, have I lost my direction? No. I’ll close this post by suggesting that if you are looking to get new machines and have the option of one of the two formats, go Blu, if you are needing a new disc player for your class or library, Blu is a safe bet, but remember, to get the full effect, you’ll need more than your standard 15inch school special TV on a cart. But then again, you’ll get many more bonus features on the new discs and there is one less disc to lose, which in a school, might be worth gold  in and of itself.

That is certainly a good point. I think the excuse that they were rushed to the market is total BS though. My guess is that unless Sony mandates that developers move to Profile 2, Profile 1 content will still be common. It might also be a situation where they can make a mint by having only the CE/LE/SE versions of a disc on P2, and the “common man” version on P1/P1.1. So I still would say that it’s safe enough for schools – ’cause how likely is it that they are going to use the bonus stuff anyway?
