I just finished up Freakonomics, an interesting read to be sure. I enjoyed it a bit more than Gladwell’s work, as they are both great ways to look at the “other side” of an argument. I didn’t find much that was directly applicable to EDIT, but there is an interesting chapter as to why teachers would cheat to increase the scores of their students in standard tests. All the arguments go at least two or three steps back from what is being looked at to find “root costs” (my term). In that manner, it may be inspirational to some of us out there who are wondering why a certain course just doesn’t seem to be working. Maybe it’s because there is some element of it that is considered too expensive by the students (and not the text books). If you want to see more – it even has it’s own website as it seems to becoming more a phenomena rather than a one shot book.
