I just spotted this – DOTGO is a service that will return search results to your SMS enabled phone for “free”. I use quotes, because there may be ads later as there is a tab on the website for advertisers. Using it is pretty easy – txt a domain that you want to search to 368266 and follow the prompts you receive to start finding what you want.
For those mLearning naysayers who are thinking that students will all need the latest and greatest smart phones to properly leverage the tool, this service shows that even the most basic phone can access similar information. If there is a concern that there is a difference in the text presented on a smart device vs the information presented withing the limitations of SMS, it seems to me to be really no different than the information presented in the (at least from my time in k-12) tattered textbooks that students have, some of them with missing or mangled pages and others being “just fine”.
