After my disconbobulated post about Blu-ray last week, I was talking to a friend about my choice this weekend and he was quite surprised… afterall, we are both geeks who are more than able to handle the whole digital file thing, but he agreed that it might not be as straight forward for the rest of the family. So when I saw this toy, I figured that it might be the way to get into the digital file game. The WD HD TV doesn’t grab files off the network, but that is point – it retains some element of physicality for those who need to keep things familiar.
I think this would be a great tool for schools – this way a teacher could have all the media that they want/need for a unit sitting on a drive and bring it all in at once. Assuming that schools still work the way they used to, some forward thinking archiver in the school would have a backup sitting in some corner to be able to recover files should a classroom drive go missing or belly up, saving time and space for sure, and perhaps money as well. And yes, it’s multiplatform friendly.
