Well, I’ve had my first partial week in the world of private enterprise, and I must say, it’s like drinking from the fire hose. I must also say that the gap between the academy and the working world is so insanely huge that it’s not even funny. At the core of this gap? The language. We are teaching kids to write long essays and craft details in school, when they are going to have to write tight, general pieces in the work world. Forget computers, forget anything else, we aren’t teaching our kids to write properly! I’m so thankful for a couple of profs in University who insisted on short papers (500 words) and for things like Twitter that have helped me get a handle on my new environment.
As a side note. This is the first time, after 10 years of working I have an office, shared as it may be, with a proper window, four (actually 5 I think) walls, a door and a place to hang my jacket. I really think I’m going to like this new world.
