When I was in Jasper, I took a series of art images as well as the landscapes and group shots that I was there to take for the class. The series that I shot included three basic elements. Wood, stone and water in various combinations. I chose this one for my POW because it, together with another one of the set had “Africa” related comments. The other comment was that the image looked like it could have come been shot in the Sahara (on the main page), and the first comment on this one is that it could be an elephant hide. Both images captured the effects of many small actors working against a single (or less numerous and relatively) massive one.
And while I was going to use one of the two images anyway, I thought it fitting that the passive actions of many be the theme as today is the anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday. Born in Gujarat and then living in Africa, these ideas all connected in my mind. Africa and India both have elephants and I have family also born in Gujarat and who spent time in Africa. These family members also adore elephants.
I also find it interesting that I’m starting to much prefer shooting in the portrait orientation over the traditional landscape orientation. I don’t know if this is a passing thing, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
