Last year there was only one of these birds at the established lake in the neighborhood, but this year they are numbering at least half a dozen (you can see a second one at the top of the frame). Curiously enough, the lake which last year had all manner of ducks (mallard, common merganser) and the ubiquitous Canada Geese, this year only has one (perhaps paired) duck that I haven’t been able to identify yet. I know there are waterfowl in the neighbourhood as I can see pairs flying around. My guess is that they might be at one of the other lakes/ponds in the area with better nesting.
