Wii Surgery

It seems that the medical profession is one of the biggest gainers from the Wii and it’s ushering into common place the alternative interface. The Beeb has a story (originally via New Scientist) about how surgeons can improve their fine motor skills using Marble Mania and soon, on simulation that is being developed by a team at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centre.

It seems that the simple steps that the Wii is making with encouraging people to use natural body motions to control virtual objects has done more for VR than any amount of total immersion equipment has in the past. Granted, Nintendo tried before with the Power Glove, but as an accessory and not the main controller there wasn’t much use for it and it was intimidating to say the least. The same can not be said about the Wiimote.
