Pop-Sci just posted something I was talking to someone about over the phone – even though Apple has it’s hand in the Blu pie, the downloadable movie system takes the cake. It is HD out of the box and easy as pie to use, especially if takes less than a minute from order to playing – like most discs do.
It’s also been mentioned that the 30 day window is there as a concession to the studios, but I’m thinking that there is something that could really sweeten the pot for everyone involved. If the 30 day window has to be there before, then offer (like the latest Bourne disc did), a few digital version of the movie for iPod or what have you. If the download release can be made to be at the same time as the DVD release, then offer a discount for one or the other… This way, the companies are happy and for a marginal cost, the user gets a no hassle way to enjoy their content (even though it’s only the ability to “use with flexibility their license”) where and how they want.
If this takes off, the only reason to get the physical disc will be for the extras, which are often for collectors anyway. For those people who just watch movies, the rental system is likely more than enough. Now I wonder how long it’s going to take DVD Jon to crack this…
