While I was away in Jasper, one of the profs had some of her recent work picked up by seemingly everyone and as it fits well with what I’ve posted before I couldn’t wait to get home and add it to my collection of research on sms speak, neologisms and the like.
Connie Varnhagen has just finished up a study (U of A News, and Google News) showing that txt shortforms “chatspeak” doesn’t lead to poor spelling. in fact, it is a bit of a workout. These findings support research (identified by Ars Technica and others, including my post).
Without reading the actual results, I would think that one could generalize these studies together by saying that there is more than one way to develop good reading and writing skills.
