We’re not jetting off anywhere this weekend, but we are planning to get away over Christmas. The sunrise this morning looked a lot like this, so that is why I thought to use it for the picture this week.

This is how I’ve felt coming back up to speed this week – the time flew by and I actually managed some sleep, but it’s all kinda cloudy in my head.

I was too busy yesterday to post anything and I haven’t been able to take anything new, so I dug this out of the “old skool” batch. I think it’s really important though to go back to old work and reflect – in that in of thinking, I’m looking at this and really appreciating the nifty fifty. One of these days after the moves are done and the weddings are done, I’m going to take photo trips around my new digs with just one lens – moving through each, seeing how to play to each of their strengths.

Hopefully by that time I might have saved and tracked down either a 70-200f4L or a 70-300 as there are an impressive number of raptors in the area that I would love to get a picture of and the lakes in the area also have an impressive number of waterfowl – next spring will be fun with the ducklings and goslings, that is for sure.

Lunch time

this little guy came right beside me while I was having lunch yesterday. He got spooked after I took the picture, but seeing as he was as big as the phone, it makes sense. This seems to be the week for baby critters on campus – now I only need to find some baby bunnies.

Yup, more Disney; nope, no apologies. I commented on D’Arcy’s blog about how amazing Aperture is and this picture is but one example of why. When we were in Disneyland, we only had one afternoon of sun. The rest of the time, it was cloudy and though there was certainly enough light to shoot and get good details without pushing the ISO past 800, the lack of sun did have the effect of changing the colors, or at least how they were captured. I don’t know what shooting in JPG would have done for colors, but shooting RAW and then being able to adjust to what I remember is so freaking cool!

The other thing that I noticed was that the first time I posted this image, I simply borrowed it from my online album, and it seems that there too, the colors got washed out (eg via gallery, Aperture). I was starting to think that Aperture wasn’t doing as I hoped, but thankfully I was wrong.

This one is right off my wife’s cell phone, but after a year and a half of research, it’s finally a reality. This machine drives like a dream. Driving home last night, stopping at lights, I was getting as many looks for the shiny car as I was for not making any sound :). For a good half of the 50k that we cruised around last night, we were running on electrical power alone. This is certainly inline with what things should be like – be the change (and they don’t call it’s razor’s edge for no reason, being out in front can hurt as well) even if it hurts.┬áNot that it’s been very long, but I can certainly say that the 06 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is one amazing vehicle and I’m certainly pleased as punch. A friend in the office just told me about his dream machine – the AirCar.

Spring is coming

Originally uploaded by idarknight.
According to the calendar, we are supposed to be in Spring – it seems that we are in Edmonton here, but in Calgary yesterday? I don’t think so – gotta love Alberta weather.

These are not Canadian, but from (of course) Disneyland. This photo as well as a few others really helped me figure out the bits of depth of field, I love how the lens I used (17-55) deals with the “blur“.

I know this is out of the ordinary for the POW – well last year I had one from the street performers as well.

Taking portraits is actually kinda tricky because there is only a very small slice of time to get the expression that you want. I started playing with this in Disneyland a bit more than I would elsewhere, hopefully I’ll have more opportunities this year again.

Light my way

Well, it’s been one heck of a busy week between life at home selling and buying a home and at work gearing up from a conference and starting up new staff.

This week I got my first invitations to invitation only groups – don’t know what it’s real worth is, but it certainly feels good.

Next week there should be some increased blogging activity as I’ll have time. I’m going to try to cover topics like Facebook, iPods and some theory.

Disney Rose

Of the many other things that Disney does well, roses are certainly one of them. They have a number of dual tone roses, this one is from everything that I’ve read is unique to Disney – well, it started here at least. Together with the Peppermint Rose next week, these flowers made for a great flora shoot.

The other thing that I learned on this trip – and I might have mentioned it before… that when shooting macro, shooting wide open isn’t what you want to do all the time, slightly larger apertures can really pull things out from the background.
