Open Data Kit – for Poor Organizations… but what about K-20?

The ODK bills itself as being a great tool for resource deprived organizations to collect data in the field. But I’m thinking that this is likely a great mLearning tool as well. Students can input location specific data and through the branching, can receive appropriate questions or information. This could really be a boon for those who want to make use of mLearning without dealing with the issues of SMS and related costs. Add to this the potential number of devices that will be coming out over the next few months and years that are Android based, the handset cost could also become rather reasonable.

There are already may instructors out there using geo-caching and other “out in the field” activities, using something like this, even though ODK is research oriented, using it in as a teaching tool might bring an new group of instructors out of the traditional four walls – or at least let their students get out and think about their world in the context of their classroom.
