Good Enough, Near Enough

Slashdot picked up a PC World bit of sci-fi yesterday and that might very well be the history that we see looking back several years down the road. With money being tight all over and pennies being pinched just about everywhere, I can see the use of Linux and “good enough” hardware being the route to go. While the collaboration thing might be a bit much, I can certainly see a number of boxed solution providers fading over the next few years as upgrades start to fall off.

Truth or not however, this story does point out just how overpowered todays machines are. For typical needs, there isn’t much lacking anymore.

All the more reason why I think the desktop will dissapear in time as a part of the computer evolution. The more powerful and smaller components get, the less likely people will buy the desktop stuff. Except those hard core hackers that want to control every component in their device.

Linux will likely be responsible for both the geek machine to remain (as a home version of production environments elsewhere) and for hardware finding a “natural purpose” after being developed by a proprietary shop. We’ve seen this with Linux on everything from the iPod to the house plant and hacks that range from getting AppleTV to function as it should have to LAMP.
