Flashed Java
One of the email storms that has been whirling in my inbox has it’s roots in the new Java update available for the Mac (it’s non essential) that is breaking Elluminate, a very handy virtual classroom environment built in Java. So according to theory, it should be able to run anywhere… and I’ve had success getting it to run in Linux environments (specifically edubuntu), but because it is Java based, it tends to be somewhat finicky. This is yet another example of the “almost” that is Java. It almost runs anywhere, it almost does everything you need… it almost is the way to go…
Unless you are online, and then people are increasingly looking to Flash, and now, through the Open Screen Project, Adobe is opening up Flash to maybe do what Java couldn’t – play anywhere.
This post is related to the last one as there is now some possibility that Apple (inhouse) or through the iPhone SDK, a third party could cook up a proper flash player and or plugin.
Regardless of what happens, this should be interesting to see if and how it takes off.
