Stripmining Creativity

A colleague sent this link to me, Sir Ken Robinson’s talk at TED.

I agree with everything that he said, especially the part about risk and creativity. It’s also underscoring something that people are starting to realize (in terms of technology – something that isn’t mentioned in the talk, but that I would understand it to be) that it’s not possible to use the same Victorian education system and teach facts and expect students to succeed or to even expect success in the same media or fields that existed in the past. The future is a moving target and the skills that we need to teach are concepts and the ability to synthesize, these are what our students will need in their future. For proof, just look to see how we are less able to rely on simple facts than our parent’s generation.
