I just tried Bluetooth and USB tethering and even though Rogers says that “technically” this should not be possible it seems to work just fine. If you can tether this way, what is stopping someone from chaining a laptop to a phone and then using the laptop as the adhoc share point? More to the point, why limit only wifi sharing then?

When I talked to Rogers, they use a similar line – tethering on Family plans is “not fair” as it one individual could suck all the data and leave nothing for the others. It makes sense in a way, but not really.

Are you using bluetooth to tether?

I’ve been tethering just fine on my Bell 500MB plan. Not sure how they’ll handle the personal wifi hotspot thing, but I assume/hope it’ll Just Work, without extra fees, as long as you stay under your data cap…

Yeah, that is an issue – I paid lip service to that with my my 4.3 comment. Tethering on iPhone on the next OS Rev will be carrier dependent (a first I think, but I’ve since learned that visual voicemail isn’t 100% universal either). On Rogers, you need to be on a 1GB plan (not shared) to tether, so I’m assuming that when it comes time to be able to do that natively in iOS, tethering will be a mute point. The cost of a plan that allows tethering might be worth it if you don’t want to go through the hassle of jailbreaking. I’m sure that some kiddie coder will figure a way to get the tethering running without carrier permission as well and with some luck that app will land in the store.

Last time that I looked, the advantage of my BlackBerry over switching to iOS was the tethering. I can tether with my regular BlackBerry plan (in Canada then and Mexico now) but either was not an option or an extra cost on iOS.

Thanks, I might be overkilling it, but I want to make sure that I’ve got enough to show that I’m serious and capable. The challenge now seems to be finding a supervisor as it seems as this idea has developed, some parts that seemed obvious fits with other research are no longer so. Even if I don’t get in this time, I’m going to finish this paper and then try again elsewhere. If I don’t I know what will happen right?

Wow, congratulations – this looks pretty damned impressive for just being part of the application process! I’m applying to a doctoral program as well (Ed.D.); it’s good to know we’ll be jumping thru similar hoops at the same time. We should compare notes throughout the process (which I’m sure we’ll both do via our respective blogs).

My reaction is based on how bad I think BB as a product is. When I see them consume other companies it makes me think one of two things can happen:a) BB gets to be a better product from this as does the product rolled into BB's foldb) BB stays pretty much the same and the purchased product withers and diesBased on the quality of experience I have had with BB, you pretty much know that I lean heavily to the latter coming true.
